This group is for anyone who would like to investigate the potential of mixed media textiles techniques, and to develop ideas thematically through projects, which could be self or group set. Ideas could be developed through the use of a range of materials, techniques and processes, including hand and machine embroidery. The evolving work could take any form, for example, samples and / or finished pieces.
Machine embroidery / surface textiles as a genre, takes many forms and can be functional or non functional. The main vision for the group is to enable the development of individual ideas and pieces of work, in a friendly, supportive and gentle environment. You might be wanting to return to textiles after years of not doing anything, or if feeling rusty, to pick up from where you left off and get your own artistic practice going (again). You might want to learn something new and different. You do not need to be an expert on the sewing machine, as there are enough people in the group who can help you to get started.
As the first year has just ended, we have started our own projects and are therefore at different stages of development, mostly the early stages of an idea. We have decided on our individual themes or topics which range for example from: working on three dimensional containers, to inspiration coming from Chelsea flower show, aerial landscapes, and signs, symbols. These could of course change! Hopefully, we shall develop our work a little, during the Summer break. On our return in October, everyone will get on with their own ideas and work, and will share ideas and techniques with one another.
New participants will be welcomed and can join the group in October with or without having developed their ideas. We will help you to get started so that you can begin to use the group as an informal springboard and supportive environment in which to discuss initial ideas, techniques, materials.
