Jenny Remfry: The Horse
Well into the 20th century, the horse was important in farming, transport and war, as well as being a source of pleasure in hunting and other sports. In the first part of this talk the origins of the horse and how it was made useful to man will be discussed, with emphasis on the 19th century when the number of horses in the cities of Britain reached its peak. In the second part, the significance of the development of the English Thoroughbred for the history of racing, from the 17th century to the present, and the contribution
of artists such as George Stubbs will be discussed.
