Geology Group at Birkbeck

In November in response to an invitation from the Geology Department of Birkbeck College thirteen members made their way to Bloomsbury despite various bus diversions trying to disrupt the day. We made our way to the exceptionally well equipped Petrology Laboratory , dedicated to the study of rocks and minerals. Here Professor Gerald Roberts instructed us in the use of the polarising microscopes which we were entrusted to use. He also gave each one of us a hand specimen of a rock and a slide containing a thin section of the same rock type and he explained what we were looking at.
