Capital Ring #2: Grove Park to Crystal Palace
8.5 miles / 13.75 km

Booking open from mid-day Monday 20 June 2022

We return to Grove Park to start the next section of the Capital Ring, a slightly shorter and gentler walk than in June. For much of the route the Capital Ring runs alongside the Green Chain Walk as it winds along local footpaths that connect various open spaces. After following Railway Children Walk ( the author of this well-known book lived nearby) we cross the main London-Kent railway line close to the site of the Hither Green rail disaster of 1967. After a short stretch of suburban streets, we pick up the Downham Woodland Walk which eventually leads us into Beckenham Place Park. After lunch close to the 18th century mansion, our route leads us out onto Beckenham Hill and a stretch of road walking through some very pleasant residential areas interspersed with a number of small parks. Eventually our route unwinds into Penge, from where we enter Crystal Palace Park and gradually climb to reach the great terraces where the Palace itself once stood. From here it is a short walk to Crystal Palace Station located at the park boundary.
