From Streatham, we set off through the woodlands of Tooting Bec Common roughly following the railway line as far as Balham. From there we cross Wandsworth Common, with several ponds and a wide variety of trees, entering Wandsworth cemetery, through the grade 2 listed gates (1878). From the gates we head for the World War I memorials. A nearby school was converted into a military hospital, hence some 477 burials, including members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, the oldest of whom was aged 25. We go briefly down Garratt Lane, where you will hear the story of the “Mayor of Garratt”. Entering Wandle Nature Park we follow the river before crossing a recreation ground and continuing to our final destination in Wimbledon.
