SUMMER GARDEN PARTY
Our Summer Garden Party will take place on 4 July between 4.30 and 7.30 at the Crouch End Cricket Club in Shepherd’s Cot, off Park Road N8. This is the first club on the left-hand side as you come up the drive. Public transport: W7 from Finsbury Park or Muswell Hill – Hornsey Central Health Centre stop. We have had a great response: at time of writing there are only 10 tickets left. We are also delighted with the number of people who have answered our call for volunteers to help on the day. Without them it would not be possible to put on such a large event. We look forward to welcoming everyone on July 4. Tickets are free but you must be a CE&DU3A member.

Jayne Forbes: A Solo Traveller’s Tales
Many of us are cautious about travelling alone, but CE&DU3A member Jayne Forbes is something of an expert, having crossed the Sahara, trekked the Himalayas and swum the Amazon, accompanied only by a backpack and a good map. She has travelled throughout India, China, the Middle East, Europe and South and North America: just about everywhere except Antarctica. In this talk Jayne will share her experiences, which include dining out on tarantulas in Cambodia and crossing a minefield in Western Sahara. There have been funny and challenging moments – including dodging bandits – and happy coincidences. Jayne has recently returned from three months in Africa and we are lucky to catch her and share her expertise and experiences before she heads off again. You will never fear travelling alone again …

Roger Hamilton: Climate Change – Where Are We Now?
What is the science behind climate change and why is it vital we bring our emissions not just down, but to net zero, as soon as we can? Roger Hamilton will explain why renewable energy generation alone will not be enough to do this despite the huge advances already made. How can the UK address the problem? Although we have achieved much in recent years, progress has begun to stall. What further steps need to be taken for us to be consistent with the Paris Agreement goals, considering the sectors of energy, transport, industry, heating and agriculture? How can we envision a future without fossil fuels, and should we rethink the issue of fossil fuel subsidies and carbon taxes?

Science of Health Seminar: Monday June 24
Ann Blandford: Farewell to the GP – is Artificial Intelligence going to replace doctors?
In this talk Professor Blandford will discuss some of the ways in which digital technologies are changing healthcare practice and the relationships between patients and professionals. She will outline exciting possibilities, but also limitations of new technologies, and discuss how we as patients and carers can shape our own experiences of health and well-being, supported by appropriate technologies.
 
GROUP NEWS
 
Netball/Walking Netball Group taster sessions. There will be two taster sessions for this new Netball group: Monday 17 June

Local History Group re-vamped from September 2019. This group is for anyone interested in starting to find out about local history, or who may have already embarked on a project, by using the History of Hornsey over five distinct time periods: pre-1800, 1800-1860, 1860-1900, 1900-1965 and post-1965. The group’s aim is to investigate how Hornsey has changed over time and what sources of information can be used to gain an understanding of the development in each period. The course will help to answer questions such as: Why is it called Hornsey? How many people lived here? When did it become a suburb? How were children educated? Where is it now? These and many other questions will be discussed depending on the interests of the group. The group meets on the first Monday of each month, except August and December, between 10am and 12noon in the Old Schoolhouse, 136 Tottenham Lane, N8, unless or until the group becomes larger than eight people.
 
Our Walking Groups
The popular Shorter Walks Group plans leisurely guided afternoon city walks and longer ‘healthy option’ green space and waterway walks.
 
The new Middle Way Walkers Group offers walks of about 8 miles on fairly flat terrain. Next walk: 20 June 2019: Hampton Court to Richmond. Places available. Priority booking is given to new members.
 
The new Green London Wayfarers Group follows a circular route around the capital in a series of walks exploring the city’s social and natural history and wildlife. Each walk is about 8 miles. Next walk: Wednesday 3 July 2019: Abbey Wood and Shooters Hill. Places available. Priority booking is given to new members.
 
The Longer Walks Group’s all-day itineraries are normally about 11-12 miles, but may stretch to 15 miles. Members walk sections of well-known long-distance paths, some of which entail steep ascents and descents, as well as flatter coastal walks.
 
Tennis
This group now meets weekly on Friday at 10.30am on the courts at Priory Park.
 
Summer Felt Making Workshop
A one-off felt making workshop is being planned for 12–15 people who would like to try the craft without committing to regular sessions. You will have the opportunity to make a small felted bowl like the ones in the photo on the felt making web page. Space will be limited so when venue and date details are confirmed on the website and Facebook, you will need to register your interest as soon as possible.
 
FIRST MONDAY PUB LUNCHES
The next lunch will be on 1 July, 1pm at the Mossy Well in Muswell Hill. These lunches provide an opportunity for members to meet in an informal and social atmosphere. Members will, of course, have to pay for their own food and drinks. If you are interested in coming, please email crouchendanddistrictu3a@gmail.com so we have some idea of numbers.
 
SOCIAL EVENTS HELP
Since starting we’ve put on a number of social events: three quizzes, a ceilidh, a theatrical evening and now a summer party. We would like to develop the number and range of such events. We already have a wonderful organiser who needs help with ideas and implementing them. If you’re interested in finding out more, please contact Sue: chair@cedu3a.org.uk.
 
THIRD AGE MATTERS MAGAZINE
We are arranging for members to receive Third Age Matters from the National Office at The Third Age Trust. This is published 5 times a year and will be posted to those members requesting it, starting with the September edition; the cost is included with the membership fee. If you want to receive the magazine, and do not receive it via membership of another U3A please let Ed Allen, Membership Secretary know by the end of July via membership@cedu3a.org.uk.
 
LONDON REGION SUMMER SCHOOL 2019
Dates: 23, 24 and 25 July
Venue: St Bride Foundation, Bride Lane, Fleet Street (5 minutes from Blackfriars underground station).
 
There are excellent choices still available, but book now to avoid disappointment. Choose from 28 talks, 4 workshops and 6 guided walks around the City of London. Topics cover Art, Current Affairs, History, Literature, Music, Science and Travel. Open Day 2019
This year’s Open Day will be on Monday 23 September, 1.30pm to 3.30pm at the Union Church and Community Centre, Weston Park, N8 9PX. We will be celebrating our second anniversary, and prospective and current members will be able to find out about our wide range of group activities, events and monthly talks.
