Interest groups update

The March Bulletin referred to the government having set out its ‘Living with Covid’ plan earlier this year. While things are returning to normal, please note that in these near normal times some groups have temporarily altered their plans and website information is not always up to date. Members should contact the Group Convener when uncertain. A number of members have reported difficulty in obtaining lateral flow tests. From 1 April, these are no longer free except for the over-75s and those with weakened immune systems. Everyone else will have to buy them.

Italian Conversation 2

This group has a few spare places. They plan to continue as a Zoom group and may be of particular interest to those who do not wish to travel far.

An opportunity to convene a German Conversation group

A number of members and would-be members have expressed an interest in joining such a group. There must be someone out there who might be interested in convening/leading such a group. Plenty of support available. Please contact the Groups Co-ordinator groups@cedu3a.org.uk .

Convener/s needed for We’re Talking Travel group

Stephen and Graham are stepping down from convening the We’re Talking Travel group, so if you enjoy travel and talking about travel, then do consider becoming a convener. Stephen and Graham will give you lots of advice and you get support from the Groups team. Contact grahamdb@gmail.com if you are interested.

New interest groups

Architecture and the Built Environment

We are looking to form a new CEDu3a Architecture and the Built Environment interest group. We are a mix of individuals with architecture and planning experience and are interested in both the design of buildings and how they come to be realised in the built environment. The activities we wish to organise would include:

Architectural tours, both studying individual buildings but also looking at the history of areas and the forms our environment takes

Organising talks about architecture and planning

Getting to know features of interest in both the local and wider London area

We would like the sessions to be participatory and would hope that potential members would be interested in contributing their expertise, in whatever field, to suggest talks, visits, and topics. The co-conveners are Dennis Bradley, Charlie Sharp (administrative convener) and Anthony White. The group details are now available on the CEDu3a website, please register your interest here.

Wine Online

All three Wine Groups are very popular with long waiting lists to join. In order not to disappoint, Luisa Welch, the convener of Wine….and More and Wine … and Much More groups, is offering a series of regular wine-tasting sessions online via Zoom. Register your interest here.

Volunteering opportunities

We are looking for two volunteers to help at our monthly meetings:

Speakers organiser – to research and book speakers for the monthly meetings. Please contact Graham Bennett for details speakers@cedu3a.org.uk

Light refreshments organiser – to organise the serving of light refreshments (tea/coffee/biscuits) at meetings. This might particularly suit someone who has joined since lockdown (an ideal way to meet people). Please contact Liz or Beatrice at volunteers@cedu3a.org.uk.

You don’t have to do it all! Both roles could be shared by two or more volunteers. For more information, see the Volunteer page on our website.

Welcome meetings for new members

If you joined CEDu3a after 1 September 2021 look out for details of a series of short, informal meetings that we are planning in late April and May at the Union Church. You will shortly receive an email giving full details (or a letter if you do not have an internet connection).

We now have almost 400 people in our Facebook group. Newly joined members may not be aware that they can request to participate in the group and then post photos, news and comments about their u3a activities. It is always good to see the interesting things going on and you will often find hot-off-the-press news about upcoming events. Find out more here.

CEDu3a Open Day

Our Open Day will take place on Thursday 16 June 2022 from 10.00am – 1.00pm at the Union Church and Community Centre (located on Weston Park at the junction with Ferme Park Road N8 9PX). More details soon.

Reminder – open garden afternoon

CEDu3a member Eileen Cosgrave is having a ‘pop- up’ open afternoon for the charity National Garden Scheme on Sunday 10 April. You can find more information here.

Southwark Playhouse reduced price tickets

Southwark Playhouse is offering members reduced price tickets for the production Five Characters in Search of a Good Night’s Sleep, devised by Mike Alfreds and Crouch End resident Sonia Linden and performed by older actors. The idea for the play stemmed from Sonja’s own insomnia which started in her mid-60s and is still dogging her in her mid-70s. The play is directed by Mike Alfreds, now in his mid-80s, and a legend much admired in the British theatre world.

CEDu3a members are offered £10 tickets for the two preview shows on 27 and 28 April 2022. If you would like to take advantage of this office email cedu3a@protonmail.com to obtain a special promotion code. Please be sure to include your CEDu3a membership number in your request.

Members may also be interested also in the Saturday matinee shows of 30 April and 21 May after which there will be an opportunity to hear from sleep experts. For those who qualify concessionary tickets are available at £18.00.

Anyone for croquet?

Enfield Croquet Club which is based in Bush Hill Park, not far from Enfield Town Centre, is running free introductory sessions to croquet during April. These will be on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, commencing Tuesday 5 April. Equipment will be provided and all that’s required is a flat pair of shoes.

Croquet enjoyed a surge in popularity last year during the pandemic as it was one of the few outdoor sports which could be safely played under socially-distanced conditions. Enjoyable at all levels, social or competitive, it’s a sport ideal for all which doesn’t require running around; just stand still and hit a ball with a mallet!

For more details, please contact Marion Cuckson on 07982 259789 or email secretary@enfieldcroquet.org.
