Annual General Meeting
The Crouch End & District U3A, a registered charity, will be holding its second nnual General Meeting (AGM) on 2 April 2020, directly after the April monthly meeting. At the AGM you will be asked to elect officer and non-officer Trustees, approve the accounts and hear a brief overview of our progress to date and plans for the future. Calls for officer and non-officer nominations have been sent out. The AGM should not last longer than one hour and it is important that as many of you as possible stay, because this year we need a minimum of 85 people present to be quorate. Looking forward to seeing you there.
Our monthly meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month at Union Church and Community Centre, Weston Park, N8 9PX. They are open to all members (please bring your membership card) and you are welcome to bring a guest: it is possible to join at the meeting. Talks now start at 10.30 am with U3A notices, followed by the main speaker at 10.45 am. Please could you kindly ensure that you arrive by 10.30 am, to avoid causing any undue disruption. Members arriving after 10.30 am will be asked to access the venue via the entrance to the right of the main door (up the ramp). If you haven’t renewed by the end of February your membership will lapse and you will not able to attend groups, meetings and events. Please renew online with PayPal (you can use a credit or debit card without being PayPal registered): it saves us a lot of work and expense.
◼ Quiz Night
We are arranging another U3A Quiz night. The date will be Tuesday 10 March at the Maynard Arms in Crouch End. This is a night not only for quiz enthusiasts, but also for anyone who wants to join in and meet new people. The event will be similar to past occasions, with the quiz and a small meal included in the price. We have an experienced quizmaster who has offered to be our host for the night. Full details of the event and how to reserve a place will be put on the Crouch End & District U3A website in the near future.
◼ Coffee Mornings
These monthly get-togethers, held in people’s homes from 11.00 am to 12.30 pm, are a great way to meet other members. February and March are full, but you are welcome to join the waiting list. We need hosts from April onwards. To go on the waiting list, or if you’re interested in hosting, please contact Jacki at https://cedu3a.org.uk/coffee-mornings
◼ First Monday Pub Lunches
Our pub lunches are held on the first Monday of every month at the Mossy Well in Muswell Hill. They provide an opportunity for members to meet and chat in an informal and social atmosphere. Members, of course, have to pay for their own food and drinks.
Calling all you creative writers out there. Can you come up with a punchy and memorable strapline for Crouch End & District U3A? It needs to be simple, short, natural sounding and easy to grasp, and of course tell potential members about our ethos. Think of the great straplines in advertising such as ‘Never Knowingly Undersold’ and ‘Every Little Helps’. Alliteration or rhyme will help it to be memorable. Please send suggestions to firstname.lastname@example.org
We have four new groups starting up shortly
◼ Beer Appreciation
◼ Art With Mixed Media
We know that lurking in your attic or loft is a dusty backgammon set, unused and unloved for many years. Bring it back to life by donating it to the new Backgammon Group. And of course, you are most welcome to join the Group and start playing again.
Could you convene an Architecture, Natural History or Art Appreciation Group? We are looking for conveners for an Architecture Group, a Natural History Group and a third Art Appreciation Group. You don’t need to be an expert, just have an interest in one of those topics. For example, you might have an aspect of architecture as a hobby, perhaps from a historical or contemporary perspective, or an interest in the buildings of London, local neighbourhoods or housing.
Thanks to those of you who joined our Facebook page after our reminder last month. There are now 188 people who ‘like’ our page. Some are people who are thinking of joining our U3A and look at the photos and reports of our activities to inspire them, so please do carry on posting group news as it does help with publicity and recruitment. Regular users can now also join the U3A Day page for the latest news about exciting events planned for 3 June! Watch this space!
The U3A Science Network is returning to Conference Aston from 10 to 13 August 2020 for its 17th annual residential meeting – a mixture of talks, visits and socialising. You don’t need any specialist knowledge to enjoy the meeting: activities are designed to appeal to anyone with an interest in the world around them and to provide opportunities for sharing their interest and knowledge.
CEDU3A Executive Committee have finalised a Safeguarding Policy that has been shared with conveners. You can read the policy here
