We have had many interesting and well-attended meetings during the past year. If you want to catch up with any of our previous talks, details can be found on our website at cedu3a.org.uk.
Open Day
Since its inauguration last September, our U3A has grown rapidly to become a thriving part of the community. To celebrate our first anniversary we will be holding an Open Day on Wednesday 26 September between 10.30am and 12.30pm. We hope existing members will join us and bring along friends or family to see the many activities available. Venue to be announced shortly.
Coffee mornings
These monthly get-togethers, held in people’s homes from 11am to 12.30pm, are a great way to meet other members. The next two mornings are on Thursday 19 July, in NW11 and Tuesday September 11 in N22 (no meeting in August). To book please contact Jacki at info@jackireason.co.uk. If you would like to host a coffee morning please contact Jacki. Expenses can be reimbursed.
Group News
Theatre: The next outing, on August 15, will be to Kneehigh’s production of Brief Encounter. You can book, until July 13, by emailing jane.clarke@gmail.com
Local History: This is a new group for U3A members with some experience of conducting local history research. Meetings will begin in September 2018 at the Hornsey Historical Society, Old Schoolhouse, 136 Tottenham Lane, N8 7EL. If you are interested, please email hornseyhistoricalsurgery@gmail.com
Eight new groups are currently being developed:
Poetry writing
Ukulele
Recorder
Music in context (especially opera)
‘Theatresports’ fun games: anything from ‘Two Ronnies’ interviews to juggling games with socks
Walking netball
Easy French literature
If you are interested in joining, either check our website (cedu3a.org.uk/interest-groups/) for the relevant group (most will not have a web page immediately, but keep an eye out as they are developed) or email groups2@cedu3a.org.uk to put your name on the enquiry list.
There will be more groups forming soon, run by people who have offered to help in response to our questionnaire, so do check the website regularly. At our Open Day on Wednesday 26 September – see above – you will be able to see what our groups do and sign up. If you want to form a group yourself and haven’t mentioned it in the questionnaire, do email David at groups@cedu3a.org.uk
Again, a reminder to all members that it is really worth registering with any group in which you are interested so that you can be put on the group’s e-mail list. Places may be available, or extra groups may be formed if there is the demand.
Some groups with restricted numbers, for example theatre visits or group walks, now operate on a first come-first served basis, giving everyone a chance to participate as long as they respond speedily to an announcement of a new event, via the website.
Visit our website at cedu3a.org.uk to keep up-to-date with all our group news, including photos and descriptions of many of our activities. To join any group, just fill in the contact form on the relevant page.
CEDU3A questionnaire
Many thanks to those who completed our recent questionnaire. As we approach the end of our first year, we are keen to hear from you with ideas for new groups, topics and speakers for the monthly meetings, ways to encourage under-represented groups in our community to join and, of course, to hear of any way in which you feel you could help our organisation. We have already had a very good response and are now analysing the results. We would still like to hear back from more of you, so if you haven’t already done so, please take a couple of minutes to complete the questionnaire and help us plan the future development of the CE&D U3A.
Treasurer
We are looking for a new Treasurer. We have an excellent bookkeeper, so this is more of an oversight role, with responsibility for the final accounts and budget. The Treasurer is also a Trustee of the U3A. If you are interested and would like more details, please contact Jayne Forbes at treasurer@cedu3a.org.uk
Volunteer opportunity
The Steering Committee has decided to split the existing Business Secretary role into two separate roles. We are therefore looking for a volunteer to fill the new Secretary position, which is largely administrative. The Secretary will support the Chair and help with the running of the Steering Committee and other related meetings. The Steering Committee will normally meet every two months. They will also be the first point of call for external and internal enquiries, passing enquiries on to colleagues to respond.
If you are interested please contact Sally via secretary@cedu3a.org.uk for more information: she will be happy to talk through what’s involved.
National and Regional U3A
We are looking for a volunteer or volunteers to represent Crouch End & District U3A at national and regional meetings. The national meeting is the U3A Annual General Meeting, held in October: this year in London. The London Regional Meetings are quarterly and are held at Canada Water. Each meeting covers a specialist topic of relevance to London U3As, ‘housekeeping’ matters and upcoming events. You will have the opportunity to meet and chat with representatives from other U3As in London and elsewhere. All we would need from you is brief report of issues covered.
For more information and to indicate your interest please contact Sally via Secretary@cedu3a.org.uk.
