Our monthly talks featuring an invited speaker are held on the second Thursday of the month at Hornsey Moravian Church, Priory Rd, London N8 7HR.
We start at 10.30am with u3a notices, followed by our invited speaker. We finish at 12 noon. Tea and coffee are available from 10am. Members are asked to bring their own cup or mug.

We have pretty much programmed all the talks for 2024 now, starting the year with the American presidency and finishing it, just in time for Christmas 2024 (!), with food historian, Pen Vogler, and her latest book, Stuffed. Outline information and all dates will appear on the website and bulletin in the New Year. Annual General Meeting 2024
A reminder that this year’s AGM will be held on Thursday 18 April 2024 at 12.00 at Hornsey Moravian Church, immediately after the monthly talk.
This is your opportunity to elect up to three new trustees and to approve the re-election of five of the current trustees, for a period of one year only, who have reached the end of their current tenure. New trustee nomination papers will be sent out to all members in early January.
Open Day 2024
Our next Open Day will take place on Thursday 30 May from 10.30am – 12.30pm at Hornsey Vale Community Centre, 60 Mayfield Road, London N8 9LP. We will be looking for volunteers to help promote the event and on the day. More details soon.

From 1 January, our new Treasurer will be Barry Morris, who is taking over from Peter Stachniewski. Any conveners (and others) who wish to be reimbursed for expenditure they have incurred while undertaking CEDu3a activities should send their claims to email@example.com.
A big thank you to Peter for the considerable and essential contribution he has made as Treasurer over the past two years.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)
The first meeting of the EDI Group was in November 2022. The strategic objective was to address equality issues, increase the diversity of our membership and ensure that the CEDu3a is an inclusive and welcoming organisation. To this end we have considered various approaches and initiatives. For example, the Membership Questionnaire will include a section on ethnicity, the results of which will be compared with 2021 Census data. The group have stressed the need for external venues to be accessible to everyone (although accessibility cannot be guaranteed at meetings held in members’ homes), and the Buddying scheme focuses on providing a welcome for newcomers to the u3a.
The group has also put together a 2024 calendar of festivals and other events for members to refer to in planning events, and to promote awareness and celebrate the very diverse population in the London Borough of Haringey. You can find it on our website here.

Volunteering with CEDu3a
Volunteering is at the heart of every u3a and at CEDu3a that is no exception. There are no paid staff, just us, the members who make it all happen. Many of our members already volunteer in different ways at regular meetings and one-off events, and as conveners and administrators.
Our Volunteering Administration Team (Vicci Midwinter and Sheena Brown) wants to make sure that they record any help members offer. That way, when help is needed, they can contact the right people and can also make sure that they do not always rely on the same people. They have worked out broadly the roles that are needed for all the different activities and events that are held or may be organised in the future and have been in touch with those who have already volunteered to match up their offers of help with these various roles. It would be great to have a few people with cars who would be prepared to buy or collect pre-ordered food and drink when needed for events and take it to the venue. Of course any shopping would be paid for in advance or reimbursed.
Interest group update
However, this does means we are looking for someone else to take on the leadership of the group. So, whether you are currently a member or a keen backgammon player who is yet to join, if you think you can help out then the groups team would be delighted to hear from you. Full support is available to anyone wishing to make their personal contribution to CEDu3a by taking this on, including from Carl himself who would be pleased to help the new convener get started.
Coffee mornings, which take place in members’ homes on varying days of the week, are a great way of getting to know other members. New members are particularly welcome. The January morning – Tuesday 16 January – is currently fully booked, but you are welcome to go on the waiting list. Monday pub lunches
The next pub lunch will be held at 1pm at the Mossy Well pub in Muswell Hill on the second Monday in the month, on Monday 8 January 2024 to avoid the Bank Holiday. The one after that will be held on Monday 5 February. Please can any member wishing to attend email email@example.com by Friday 5 January so John has an idea of numbers. Pub lunches are an opportunity for members to meet and chat in an informal and social atmosphere (paying for their own food and drink).
Jazz evening – advance notice
At the summer parties, members enjoyed the performances of Paul Soper’s Jazz Band with the singer Maggie Brown. This led to the idea of a jazz evening as part of the Social Events on offer.
Paul gave an enthusiastic response in support of the idea and we have organised this for Friday 15 March, 7.30 to 10.30pm at the British Legion Muswell Hill with the full band and singer. So please mark and keep this date free and watch out for the opportunity to purchase tickets at £12.50 very soon.
