Bulletin no. 3 (January 2018)
What a wonderful start for our U3A. We launched in late September 2017 and now have over 400 members and more than 40 groups. Our organisation is run by members for members and so a special appreciation goes to the group conveners who ensure the quality and fun of our core activity. Enormous thanks also go to members of the Steering Committee and other working groups who continue to develop the Monthly Meetings, publicity, social events, policies, website and the budget.
We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead with new groups, a programme of social events and a wide variety of speakers at our Monthly Meetings. In 2018 we will obtain our full charitable status, and will hold our first AGM early in 2019 we when you will vote for our first Management Committee. This Committee will be in place for three years, succeeding our current Steering Committee (who are all volunteers who forgot to put their hand down).
To continue to develop our successful U3A we need more members to help with the organisation. Volunteering can be just a few hours a month or week, whatever suits you and your commitments, so please contact me if you are interested. My email address is email@example.com.
Areas where we would welcome additional support are: organising Monthly Meetings; developing policy; financial admin; helping to organize our programme of speakers and serving as members of the catering team. Many of these roles can be shared and can easily accommodate absences. And of course we always need group conveners, all you need is a passion and interest in a subject – there’s lots of help and guidance – just contact David, our Groups Coordinator on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you to everyone for helping to make our new U3A such a success in 2017 and for your continued involvement.
Wishing you a happy and peaceful new year, with lots more learning, fun and socialising.

These monthly get-togethers, in people’s homes, are a great way to meet other members. The next two gatherings are on Tuesday 16 January 11-12.30am in N19 and Thursday 15 February in N22. If you would like to come along to either, and/or would be willing to host a future morning, contact Jacki Reason on email@example.com
Are you good at organising? Want a straightforward, contained brief which can be planned ahead of time? We would love you to help us organise our Monthly Meetings and hopefully take over the job once you are familiar with what needs doing. Ideally, we would like a small team of two or more people to take this on so that you can share the tasks and deputise for each other when away. We have most of the basics in place for set up and now need to pass the role over to other members.
Key tasks include:
- Liaise with venue staff (currently Union Church)
- Oversee the set-up of the room (no furniture moving necessary)
- Ensure enough catering volunteers available
- Check the level of catering supplies (this could be devolved to the catering team)
- Put out external and internal signage
- Ensure mobility access is open and signed and that there is someone on hand to help
- Liaise with our audio visual team so that all equipment is in place and working for the speaker
- Adhere to any health and safety procedures for the venue and U3A
If you would like to talk this over do get in touch with Sally, our Secretary, on
As always, our website has detailed information on all our groups, meetings and events as well as feedback from previous events and other contributions from members. It is very clearly set out with links to everything you need to know. Visit it at www.cedu3a.org.uk.
