Royston Circular

10.5 miles / 17 km

This is a circular walk on the borders of Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, taking in sections of both the Icknield Way and the Hertfordshire Way. Heading south from Royston, we climb gradually through an undulating arable landscape, reaching the settlement of Therfield with its attractive village green before continuing to Felshall. After lunch at Felshall Cross we loop around and head north, eventually descending the chalk slopes at Thrift Hill, where we encounter an area set aside as ‘gallops’ for racehorses. We are now heading back to Royston, but not before a short and steep ascent of the Pen Hills and a lovely ridge walk offering delightful views north over to Cambridgeshire. Our final descent takes us over Royston golf course and back to the town, which offers several opportunities for refreshments.
