Abbey Line Trail

This walk will take us along the route of the Abbey Line branch of the rail that is a commuter train connecting seven local communities. We will start at St Albans Abbey station where we quickly reach the beginning of the trail along the River Ver. The river is more like a brook, but it is a lovely woodland walk with views of the cathedral off to the left. We pass allotments, follow a path of willows, through fields, across roads and reach Frogmore Pits where we might catch sight of a Kingfisher. We return to walk along the River Ver and pass under the rather noisy M25 to continue our path. As we reach Jack Williams’s Wood, we will stop alongside the water to enjoy our picnic lunches. We then turn into a field, cross it and head uphill to walk through Bricket Wood common in a peaceful section of the walk. We reach Munden House Grounds which we will follow for quite some time through the vast estate, over the M1 and finally leave the estate at the next road. We have one more walk along the river which is now the River Colne before heading to Watford Junction station for a refreshment break and the end of the walk. This walk will take us on hard, rocky, grassy and woodland paths, through woods, wheat and cattle fields, and frequent traffic noise, and could certainly lead to other future walks!
