A Volunteering opportunity

The St Mellitus Organ Restoration Project
In 2019, the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) awarded St Mellitus parish a generous grant to restore its World War I memorial Hunter organ. Dedicated in December 1920 in remembrance of soldiers from the parish who went to fight in The Great War, unusually it commemorates not only those who lost their lives, but also those who returned.
◼ Alongside the organ restoration there is funding for an activity plan offering education, training and employment opportunities to local people and we are also ensuring the project’s musical legacy with concerts, recitals and music lessons for local children.
◼ Would you like to get involved? Have you ever wanted to acquire the skills to explore your family tree, but don’t know how to go about it? Or perhaps you’re a keen genealogist or historian looking for a new challenge? We are seeking volunteers to help us discover more about the history of the organ and the lives of the soldiers to whom it is dedicated.
◼ Previous research experience isn’t necessary, just enthusiasm and a little spare time. In return, we can offer training in archive research. Many of the major archives are now available online, so much of the research can be done from home but you will be supported by us with regular meetings and the opportunity to meet with other volunteers.
◼ We are holding our next volunteer researchers’ event on Saturday, 15 February 2020 at 11:00-12:30 at St Mellitus Parish Church, Tollington Park, N4 3QT in Stroud Green.
◼ To inspire your research, this will be a guided historic walk around the local area, led by Oonagh Gay from Islington Guided Walks, followed by a drop-in session at the project room afterwards for those who would like some assistance. (If the weather is poor we will have a talk from Oonagh at the church instead.)
◼ Please come along! We plan to make these meetings regular affairs during 2020 to offer training and peer support. We are keen to swell our researcher numbers and to ensure that the organ restoration project becomes a community project with the support and involvement of local residents alongside St Mellitus parishoners.
◼ If you have friends or neighbours who might like to get involved please invite them too; the more the merrier!
◼ If you have any further questions, contact either Emma Beck on 07561 503326or Kirsten Walton on07967 197385.
