►New Group – Fringe Theatre

There is a wealth of fringe and local theatre to explore in London. We define “fringe” broadly, virtually anything but the big West End names. So we may go to the Young Vic as well as the Gatehouse. The Off West End website lists about a hundred venues, so there is a lot to see in pubs and halls as well as theatres proper. There is a wide range of genres to delve into from the classics to musicals, drama to pantomime, dance to comedy.

We will aim for lower prices (£12-£30-ish), and the idea is that members buy their own tickets beforehand (otherwise it gets complicated) from a programme we will send out well in advance. We will meet in the theatre bar or a nearby cafe or pub, and maybe stay to chat afterwards.

This is the general idea. Let’s discuss how to proceed at our initial meeting, which the conveners will organise for October – register your interest at groups2@cedu3a.org.uk now to be invited.

When: This will depend on what we decide to see, with a leaning towards Mondays and Tuesdays, usually in the evenings with some matinees. We will begin with a get-together in October (after the U3A Open Day) in a local venue to discuss the sort of events we’d like to see.
Where: Initial meeting in a cafe/pub.

Conveners: Gill Shiel, Jennifer Pulham, Jane Saunders

  1. Great idea… have always preferred fringe theatre. Just not sure about those timings because of my work but will see…. well done for this!

  2. Hi, I am Shirley Teece, Convener of Italian Conversation Group 1. On The Open Day. one of the Group members – Annie Hemingway told me she was about to put her name on the list and asked if I would like her to put my name down

Today, I have had an email from another member of Italian Conversation Group, Betty Morgan. She said she had found out at the last minute this morning that the Fringe Theatre Group was meeting in Crouch End today and went along. She said she knew it was something I am interested in, and said she had put my name down on the list.
Does that mean that I am on your list. I am a member of Theatre Group. Before I retired I was a casting director, and my work involved me going to theatre regularly looking for new talent. At some point I have been in just about every theatre in the UK, including London of course. Fringe theatre sort of kicked off in the 60s and they were always good sources of new faces.

So, please I do hope you will be able to enrol me in to your Group

    My membership number is 484
